Purpose
At the end of the 2007 fundraising cycle, UGA HEROs analyzed its previous fundraising efforts and realized that the organization had not yet developed a successful community-based fundraising model.
The need for support from members of the local community became apparent. UGA HEROs decided to solicit the expertise of local professionals by creating a “Board of Advisors” composed of active members of the community with specialties that could complement the mission of the organization.
The primary reasons for developing the UGA HEROs Board of Advisors were threefold:
(1) To help to provide a means for connecting with the local community—including local volunteer organizations, businesses, and individuals— that can help enact the mission
(2) To help attain a level of credibility among the professional and service sectors of the Athens community (UGA HEROs is a young organization and cannot appreciate the benefits that usually come with age, such as name recognition and public familiarity of the mission)
(3) To advise the Executive Council in issues concerning their respective areas of expertise
